As public benevolent institution (PBI) we are a non-profit institution organised for the direct relief of poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune, disability or helplessness.

The characteristics of a PBI are:

• We are set up for needs that require benevolent relief,
• We relieve those needs by directly providing services to people suffering from them where we can,
• We carry on for the public benefit,
• We are non-profit,
• We are an institution, and
• Our dominant purpose is providing benevolent relief.

Needs requiring benevolent relief:

The condition or misfortune relieved by us as a PBI must be such poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune, disability or helplessness as arouses pity or compassion in the community.

Public

As a PBI, we operate for the public. We confer relief on an appreciable needy class in the community. Our organisation does not have to be controlled or funded by government to operate for the public.

Non-profit

As PBI we operate on a non-profit basis. That is, our assets or profits are not distributed to members, owners or particular people, except as reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred on behalf of the organisation or as proper remuneration for administrative services.
